How does SmartCells Cushioning Work?
SmartCells utilize a patented cushioning technology. The structure consists of an array of cylindrical rubber cells that act like miniature springs. Under the light pressure of standing or walking, the cells remain upright and provide a stable surface that does not affect balance. However, when a high-force impact occurs like a step or a fall, the cells collapse laterally, absorbing up to 90% of the impact energy and then returns it back to the body.
Does the cushioning make it hard to walk?
No. This is the primary advantage over foam mats. Because foam is soft throughout, it can create a “mushy” surface that causes instability for those with balance issues. SmartCells are designed to be firm under normal foot traffic, providing a stable, “low-trip-hazard” surface that doesn’t impair natural gait.
Can smartcells mat sections be glued together?
Yes. For custom configurations or wall-to-wall installations, SmartCells sections can be joined. Depending on the product, they can be bonded using a specialized adhesive or industrial-strength double-sided tape provided by the manufacturer to ensure the seams remain flush and don’t create a trip hazard.
Do SmartCells products contain latex?
No. All SmartCells products are made from 100% synthetic rubber and are completely latex-free. This makes them safe for use in many physical therapy, physical training, or recovery applications.
How is SmartCells Flooring cleaned?
Because the material is non-porous, it does not soak up liquids or harbor bacteria.
- Routine: Sweep or vacuum to remove debris.
- Deep Clean: Use a damp mop with standard household or hospital-grade disinfectant cleaners.
- Avoid: Do not use petroleum-based cleaners or harsh solvents (like paint thinner), as these can degrade the rubber over time.
Can wheelchair or medical equipment roll over your products?
Yes. The 1/2 inch low profile combined with molded beveled edges allows wheelchairs, walkers, and medical carts to roll over the mats with ease. The surface is firm enough that wheels will not “sink” into the material, which is a common struggle with traditional foam safety mats.
How is smartcells flooring installed?
There are three main ways to install the product:
- Standalone Mats: Simply place them next to a bed or in a high-risk area (no adhesive required).
- Custom Modular Solutions: We ship mat sections to you and they are connected with our patented connector system! For larger jobs, we can send an install team for installation.
- Wall-to-Wall Flooring: For a seamless look, SmartCells can be installed as a complete surface or beneath carpet tiles or professional-grade vinyl. In this case, the SmartCells are glued together and built on the subfloor, and the finish flooring is adhered on top.
How slippery are smartcells products in the presence of liquid?
SmartCells are made of high-quality rubber, which naturally has a high coefficient of friction. Even when damp, they tend to offer better traction than standard vinyl or tile. However, like any smooth surface, standing liquid can create a slip risk, so it is always recommended to wipe up spills immediately.
